Abe

When Abe woke, he was in bed alone. Before opening his eyes, he reached out an arm to the side to explore the empty space in the king-sized bed. His eyes opened wide when he realized Jeffrey was gone. Rolling over to his side, he breathed a sigh of relief as he inspected the indentation remaining in the pillows that indicated the night before was not a figment of his imagination.

After he made his way to the bathroom, Abe saw Jeffrey’s suitcase tucked neatly against the linen closet door. He smiled. The weekend together was real, and it was only beginning. Abe pulled his toothbrush from the medicine cabinet and brushed while sensations of delight danced through his body. He didn’t know for sure what was to come in the rest of the weekend, but he knew that he would enjoy it.

Abe dressed down in worn jeans and a T-Shirt. He pulled a plaid jacket from the closet in the bedroom while a mug of coffee brewed in the kitchen. He estimated that he spent less than ten minutes getting out of bed and making himself presentable for the day. He was eager for the day to begin. After retrieving the mug of coffee from the kitchen, he found himself standing on the front porch staring out at the silhouette of Jeffrey seated at the end of the dock.

Abe thought first of calling to Jeffrey, but instead, he slowly strolled toward the dock. The first step onto the wood slats caused a slight creak. Jeffrey turned his head. His smile was one of equal parts relief and joy. “Good morning sleepyhead,” called Jeffrey.

“It can’t be past eight.”

Jeffrey said, “I was up with the sun. The curtains were wide open. The change in light wakes me up.”

Abe approached and reached down with his left hand to knead Jeffrey’s shoulder while he sipped at his coffee with the right. “Remind me to close the curtains. We don’t want a bear and raccoon audience for our activities either.”

“You never know when they might be shooting videos to sell on the black market.”

Abe laughed. “Those clever raccoons. I wouldn’t put it past them.”

Abe sat on the dock next to Jeffrey. Setting the mug on the wooden planks, he attempted to pull his legs into the same cross-legged position. It didn’t work. After failing miserably, Abe stretched his legs out straight and leaned back supporting himself on his hands. Jeffrey smiled in sympathy and said, “We’re definitely getting older.”

“I hope you don’t mind that I’m a little less flexible than you. I injured my knee in a bicycle accident many years ago. I’ve never gotten the full range of motion back.”

“You had plenty of flexibility for me last night,” said Jeffrey.

“Last night was amazing. Can you believe that we’re even here together? The cruise was over twenty years ago. I convinced myself that I would never see you again.”

Jeffrey shrugged. “I guess I wasn’t quite as convinced. We didn’t exchange contact information, but I gave you enough details about me that I thought you might think about looking me up.
